Comparing Vinyl Siding Prices: Is the Style Worth the Cost?

If you are choosing vinyl siding for your home, you may be attracted to the many styles available to you - whether this includes shingles, Dutch lap, or vinyl brick siding. But if you have gone so far as to investigate prices, you may have noticed that some of these styles come with a higher price tag than traditional smooth vinyl siding.

sheetrock prices

Are the styles really worth the cost? The answer depends on several factors.

SHEETROCK PRICES

Consider the thickness of the panels. The minimum thickness that meets code is.035 inches, while higher-grade sidings are generally between.044 and.055. Thickness is important because the thinner it is, the more likely it is to sag and bend. According to Consumer Reports, the highest performing type of siding is shaped to lay flatter on the wall. Dutch lap, for example, has more bends, giving the siding more rigidity than clapboard styles. This means increased weather-resistance and a longer life. Will a particular style add value to your home? Owners of historic homes may choose various styles with a traditional look, such as Dutch lap or cedar vinyl siding. Higher prices at the outset can be worthwhile when the time has come to sell your home.

Newer styles can be worth the cost, if the product is high-performing, has a good warranty, and makes your home more attractive. A qualified installer can help you compare vinyl siding prices and products, and select the style that is right for you - and your home.

Comparing Funeral Prices in the UK

A funeral is typically the third largest expense you will incur in your lifetime, behind purchasing a house, and paying for a wedding. These days as consumers we all to often choose to compare prices and costs for a large expense before we make a decision to purchase. Price comparison web sites are common on the Internet, and we have all at some point used a site such as GoCompare, Moneysupermarket or Confused.com to compare market prices.

prices for ipod touch

Dealing with a death is an extremely upsetting and stressful time, and if this has occurred unexpectedly and you are left to make arrangements, it can be even more harrowing. People often just contact their nearest funeral home, and under the influence of grief, are not always capable of making rational decisions. There is a tendency to ask the funeral home to "just do a good service", feeling it is undignified to push on discussing costs. It is not uncommon for recently bereaved family to receive a further unexpected shock when they get their final funeral bill. A funeral in the UK can amount to a cost of £10,000 if unnecessary funeral expenses are not carefully managed. Just the cost of the coffin alone can make up 30-40 percent of this final cost. Add funeral flowers, vehicles, obituary notices, church expenses, and it all amounts to an expensive ritual.

PRICES

The funeral industry in the UK consists of many small independent funeral businesses and two corporate organizations - The Cooperative Funeralcare and Dignity Funerals. Although these large corporate funeral care companies should have the buying power to offer the consumer greater discounted funeral prices....this is not usually the case.

Our attitude culturally towards death is changing. The tradition of death is evolving. People are demanding something different and more personalized than the 'standard' traditional funeral. In fact cremation is becoming more and more popular, as are new ways of memorializing a lost loved one. Cost is a big factor, and the recession in the UK is taking its toll on the death care industry too. Why spend £10,000 on an elaborate funeral, when a dignified service can be achieved for a quarter of this price?

Comparing funeral prices between funeral providers in the UK is vital. You will be extremely surprised at just how much funeral costs can vary even just on a local level. Do your research, decide what it is YOU want before contacting a funeral home. That way YOU are in control, and YOU can be asking the right questions.

Comparing Dustless Drywall Sanders

There are two major players in the dustless drywall sander world. Porter Cable has a model popular with professionals that need high productivity. It features a large, rounded orbital sanding head with the electric motor mounted in the extension handle. The Dustless Technologies Turbo Drywall Sander features a smaller, rectangular orbital sanding head powered by the air flow from the vacuum. It is designed more for tight places and for sanding in corners.

sheetrock prices

The biggest problem with the Porter Cable Drywall Sander is its weight - 8.5 lbs. Holding that kind of weight shoulder-high will cause muscle burn within a few minutes and require frequent breaks. It can turn a sizable project into a misery marathon. Some people opt for manual pole sanding methods and put up with the dust to avoid the fatigue associated with the Porter Cable Drywall Sander.

SHEETROCK PRICES

The Porter Cable Drywall Sander is a good quality unit that has advantages too. For a professional drywall sander who needs a high productivity unit, it is a good choice because of it's aggressive sanding action. It enables the operator to cover larger areas quickly, but you also pay a premium price for it. It sells for approximately 0, and that does not include a vacuum - just the drywall sanding unit. For small contractors, do-it-yourselfers and homeowners, the high price of the Porter Cable system may not be worth the expense.

And in tight places like bathrooms, the Porter Cable Drywall Sander is often not practical because the sanding head is too big; it's rounded, so it won't reach into corners; the long pole inhibits maneuverability, and you can't adjust the angle of the head to reach everywhere you need to.

So, how do you handle these tight places? Manual sanding? No - that still creates dust that requires a lot of work to clean up. The Turbo Drywall Sander From Dustless Technologies goes where the Porter Cable unit cannot. It has a rectangular head so it can sand in corners. The pole is removable so you can convert the unit into a dustless hand sander - perfect for tight places. An adjustable knuckle enables you to set the angle of the head wherever you need it to accommodate even the most awkward working conditions.

The Dustless Turbo Drywall Sander is an excellent alternative to the Porter Cable Drywall Sander for people who want a lighter weight system at a lower cost. The Turbo Drywall Sander weighs only 4.5 lbs. and sells for less than half the price (only 0) of a Porter Cable unit (0). It is also a great asset for professional drywall contractors who need the high productivity of the Porter Cable system, but also want a lightweight, more versatile system for small jobs, tight places and touch up.

A big consideration is the type of vacuum used along with the drywall sander. Porter Cable sells a 10 gallon wet/dry vacuum to go along with its model 7800 drywall sander for 0, bringing the total cost for the Porter Cable set up to 0. Dustless Technologies sells a 16 gallon wet/dry vacuum for 0, bringing the total cost for its turbo drywall sanding system to under 0.

For less money, the Dustless Technologies vacuum has some distinct advantages over the Porter Cable vacuum. While the Porter Cable Vacuum claims to deliver 99.85% efficiency, the Dustless vacuum goes further by capturing airborne particles down to .5 microns with its optional micro-prefilter. This is very close to HEPA-level performance, which captures down to .3 microns. When dealing with ultra-fine drywall dust, the extra filtration is noticeable.

Another consideration when choosing a drywall sanding system is the cost of the sand paper. The Porter Cable Drywall Sander uses proprietary sand paper that costs a sheet. The Dustless Technologies Turbo Drywall Sander uses standards sized hook-and-loop sand paper sheets available at any hardware store for around a dollar a sheet.

Comparing Fein Tools Against Their Rival Multimaster Tools

Fein tools are acknowledged to be the best multi-purpose power tools in the market. Their multimaster tool used a special technology which enabled precise custom cutting and finishing of wood, drywall, as well as any other material you are likely to see in a house. Until their patents on this technology ran out a few years ago, they held a stranglehold on this segment of the home renovation tools market.

However, all good things end, and now there are rival manufacturers making and selling their own multimaster tools using this same technology. For the time being, the Fein Multimaster is still considered the best. However, its astronomical price tag of 0 for the basic tool or 0 for the basic tool plus a standard collection of blades and accessories puts it out of reach of many professionals and most DIY home remodelers. Fortunately for those who must have the best, it is possible to buy factory-reconditioned Fein tools for a 30% discount or secondhand on eBay and Amazon for even lower prices.

SHEETROCK PRICES

Even with a 30% discount, Fein power tools still remain out of the budget for many people. One strong contender trying to replace Fein tools as the king of the hill is the Bosch Multi-X. It costs about half as much as a Fein Multimaster, and cuts just as well. The only problem is that it is a cordless tool and has a short battery life. On the other hand, it IS cordless and can be used in places where Fein tools cannot reach.

Besides Bosch, there are only two other brands of multimaster tools which are reliable and work well in the US market - the Rockwell Sonicrafter and the Dremel Multi-Max. Both of them sell for a quarter of a Fein Multimaster's price and work well enough given their price. Neither one is as solidly built as the original and their quality control is nowhere nearly as good, but their low price makes them useful and affordable choices for most amateur home remodelers and craftsmen.

Two big problems with all four of these power tools - Fein Multimaster, Bosch Multi-X, Rockwell Sonicrafter and Dremel Multi-Max- is the short life of their blades and the high cost of replacing them. If you are a casual user rather than a professional, the replacement blades and accessories all practically cost the same, within 10% to 40% of each other depending on the blade and which retailer is currently offering a special discount.

Right now, Fein tools remains king of the hill for the premium market. However, once Bosch cleans up the mess with its batteries, many home renovation contractors will probably start using it for its increased portability and lower cost. Until they come up with better offerings, Dremel and Rockwell are only able to compete at the low-end of the market.

Comparing Air Conditioner Prices

Getting an air conditioner doesn't seem all that fun, but it is important to have to keep you and your family cool. Though ac prices seem too high to handle sometimes, looking around, and knowing what it is that you are looking for can help you get a unit that gives you a run for your money. That way you get the best machine you can within your budget, and end up having a nice cool home to stay in when the weather outside is too hot to bear.

prices for smirnoff vodka

When you start looking for good quality air conditioners, try looking on the internet. Instead of wasting gas and time driving around from Sears to home depot to the next business, you can just do a few clicks online. This, other than saving you time and money, can help you decipher the air conditioner prices that you are looking for. This way you can find the brands, types, and sizes of units that are offered.

PRICES

On top of finding brands and types, you will be able to compare and contrast not only the air conditioner prices, but the warranties offered, the quality, and benefits of the different machines. That way, you can have a good idea of what you want, the price range you are looking at, and the benefits you want to receive. Looking at different units side by side on the computer can help you narrow your search from a two digit number to a one digit number.

The next thing to look into is getting a consultant to look at your home and help you decide what kind of unit it is that you need. Though it seems like it would be a lot of money and not worth it, it actually would be. That way you can have a professional tell you what kind of air conditioner you need, depending on the size of your home, its rooms, as well as the layout. That way you won't pay too much for an air conditioner that under works and costs you over what it should for energy output. Also you won't pay too little for a machine that works overtime and again makes those energy bills increase.

If you don't even know where to start when looking for an air conditioner, and don't know what brands you want to look at, ask around. Neighbors, friends, coworkers all have different types of cooling units, and can give you an idea of what it is you may want. See how they like their unit, how the company they bought it through has been treating them, and the air conditioner prices they paid. That way you can find the right kind of air conditioner that will suit you and your family, and cool your home how it needs to be cooled on those sweltering summer days!

Log Home Kits - Comparing Materials Lists and Pricing

Log home kits are generally defined as a materials package that has been pre-cut and prepared to give you all the necessary logs and materials to enable you to build a defined amount of your log home. Unfortunately, there is no standard for defining the various levels of completeness among log home manufacturers. This oftentimes makes comparing the kits from manufacturer to manufacturer a difficult process. The process becomes even more complicated because the differences in type and quality of materials vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

For example, let's say you have kit materials lists from two different manufacturers that are identical down to the number of screws. One manufacturer's kit cost is 20% less than the other's. At face value it would seem the less expensive package is the better deal. But this is not necessarily the case, particularly if the lower-priced kit is comprised of green pine log and low-quality single pane windows and the other kit is made up of kiln-dried cedar logs and top of the line dual-pane windows with a 25-year warranty.

SHEETROCK PRICES

However, as a general rule of thumb, most log home manufacturers offer some variation of three packages: log and timber shell, weather-tight shell and a complete turn-key materials package.

The Log & Timber Package (LTP) is best suited for developers, builders and/or general contractors who have experience building log homes and also have access to wholesale building materials. LTPs typically include the precut, fitted and numbered logs for the exterior walls and timber for joists, beams, posts and trusses (sealant/caulking tape, lag bolts, splines, nails, screws, nuts, bolts and washers are included). Windows, doors, flooring, interior studding, sheetrock/drywall, moldings, roof decking, roofing or other finished materials are not included. When purchasing a LTP, understand that the total cost of materials can be more than double the LTP kit cost, so plan accordingly.

The Weather-Tight Shell Package (WTS) is the most popular for log home enthusiasts who are building their first log home. As its name suggest, this package typically contains all the material necessary to erect a weather-tight shell that allows a new home-owner to seal the home off from the elements and continue working on the interior at whatever pace or budget that suits them best. Like the LTP, the WST kit includes all the exterior logs and timer to frame the house. Also included in most WTS kits are the windows and exterior doors (including bucks and trim), roofing materials, interior framing materials (2X4 / 2X6), second story floor joists and sub-flooring (as applicable) and all porch/decking material. Sealant/caulking tape, lag bolts, splines, nails, screws, nuts, bolts and washers are also included. A WTS package typically gets builders to 70% completion. Finished flooring, interior walls and appliances are not included.

Turn-Key Packages (TKP) are typically more expensive, but they include everything you will need to build your new log home so that you just turn the key and move into your new home. A TKP offers some advantages: by sourcing all the materials from a single supplier, most buyers can save money compared to buying smaller quantities of materials from several different vendors, plus there are fewer invoices and payments to manage. If there happens to be a problem with any of the materials, supplies or appliances, you have one point of contact to call to get things resolved. Because of the volume of kits produced, some of the larger log home manufacturing companies, like Cedar Knoll Log Homes, get wholesale pricing on non-log materials and pass that savings on to their customers.

At the end of the day, it really comes down to personal preference and budgetary constraints. The best advice I can offer is to work with a log home company that makes you feel at ease and comfortable; one that is willing to work with you to give you what you want, not one that tries hard to push on you what they want to sell because it is the most profitable (for them). Lastly, while I still believe that a handshake means a deal, get everything in writing: a signed contract by both parties protects everyone.
