How to Properly Install Shower Tiles

When debating how to tile a shower, first you must make sure that the underlying sheetrock is satisfactory. If you are tiling over new construction, this will not be a concern. If you are remodeling or tiling in lieu of making patch repairs, ensure that the sheetrock is not damaged. The next step is to gather all of your materials and tools. Do not forget to use a level to help maintain straight lines. You will also need your tiles, waterproof mastic, a trowel, tile cutter, and caulk. Silicone caulking is best for around the tub-line or at the drain pan seam.

Now is not the time to determine how to change a shower faucet. The shower hardware & plumbing should be installed prior to the tiling process. Remove only the faucet handles and showerhead to make tiling easier. Placement of your first row of shower tiles will determine the entire job's success. From the highest part of the tub, measure up 1/8 inch. With your level, mark a straight line around the circumference of the surface to be tiled. This is your start line. Spread your mastic on the wall section and use the grooved tip of the trowel to make diagonal lines. Do not cover the entire wall at once or the mastic will dry prior to you placing the tiles.

Firmly place your tiles on the mastic using your guide line. Leave a 1/8 space between tiles for grout. Use the rounded edge tiles for the final row at the top. Remember that you will need to use the tile cutter to fit around shower hardware and where a full tile is too large. Once all of the tiles are in place, you must let the mastic cure for at least twenty-four hours. After curing, grout in between each of the shower tiles. Apply a silicone bead between the bottom row and the tub. Once the grout has cured, use a silicone based glaze to protect the grout from moisture and mildew. How Soundproofing Drywall Saved Space And Cost at Fort Sam Houston

Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas is the world's largest military medical training facility. As one of the U.S. Army's oldest installations - where the first medic recruit arrived back in 1845 - Fort Sam Houston is the country's National Historic Landmark with largest single-site collection of historic structures, over 900 buildings. These buildings document different eras and reflect evolving trends in Army planning and design.

But Fort Sam Houston isn't only about preserving history and documenting "the way things were." Today, more than 27,000 military and civilian personnel work at the post and continuous new construction projects (averaging million annually) co-exist right alongside the post's historic sections.

One recent project involved the construction of four new METC (Medical Education Training Campus) dormitories to house 2,400 military medical personnel for short-term training and education.

Plan of Attack

The project faced four main constraints that designers and contractors had to overcome. First, the barracks were limited by the size of the existing structure. Second, each unit had to meet the Army Corps of Engineers' requirement for the square-footage allocated to each soldier. Third, the construction technique had to deliver an STC rating of almost 50 in an area with frequent tank and artillery fire, jets, chopper noise and things that go "boom" in the night. Finally, the dormitory has to meet the strict requirements of Leader in Energy and Environmental design (LEED) Silver Certification.

The contractor, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, decided to construct the new METC dormitories off-site in 682 modular sections. Because of the external building limitations, the first option to hit the cutting room floor was the traditional method of using resilient channels for party walls. Resilient channel would have wasted precious floor space and was not a feasible option.

Instead, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers enlisted the aid of the QuietSolutions product line from Serious Materials, including soundproofing drywall. This allowed the project to conserve space on every interior wall by building just as if they were using regular drywall.

Soundproofing drywall was deployed by the builder and performed under fire just like regular gypsum board - only better - and achieved the specified STC rating without sacrificing one square-inch of troop living space.

How the War Was Won

Selling a Home Quickly in a Buyer's Market

Selling a home can be incredibly stressful and difficult, especially if you need to do it quickly. It's possible that some houses in some markets in this country could linger on Multi-lists for years!

So, what should you do?

The first thing you should do is clean out the house. Have a garage sale, rent a storage space, and throw out most of your stuff. Just get the stuff out of the building. How far should you go? There should not be anything on the floor of any closet in your house and all rooms and closets should feel a little empty. Clean and make any repairs needed to get a good well-maintained appearance. Then depersonalize the house so that it starts to look like an upscale hotel room.

Make rooms look like what people expect. People expect to see living rooms, bedrooms, dens, dining rooms and kitchens. If you have some extra rooms you can have offices, playrooms, media rooms, etc., but only after you have fulfilled basic expectations. In a living room or den you should have a sofa, two chairs (or a loveseat) and a TV grouped toward the focal point (usually a TV or fireplace, sometimes a view). U shaped groupings or L shaped groupings work fairly well in most rooms. If you have a really big room remember groupings of furniture should fit into roughly 12-foot square groups. Bedrooms should have beds and 2 bedside tables in groupings opposite the entry door if possible. If the room is small, don't have any more furniture.

Then get fresh, clean paint on everything you can. It's not that hard to get to be a good painter. It just takes practice. You want your house to look new to a buyer. Fresh paint can make it look and smell newer. People want houses with lots of light so choose a light, pale, warm color. Relocation companies buy thousands of gallons of gallons of ivory paint a year and paint over the "custom" paint jobs people put in houses. They know it helps resale to have clean paint.

Then we come to the MOST IMPORTANT part of the process. Clean up the yard and the front of the house. Then do everything you can to make your home attractive from the outside. Why is this the MOST IMPORTANT? If buyers don't come inside you will never sell your house. It MUST look attractive enough on the outside to bring in buyers. Over the top wonderful is great. Cute houses may be hard to define, but as a general rule buyers like some rock, framed out windows, more than one color and landscaping. If you don't have a cute porch or portico, adding one can do wonders. Even a pergola can work. You might get the best advice from landscapers. The money you spend here may pay off better than any remodeling.

So you have the house ready and it's looking as good as you can make it look. The next thing you can do is all about marketing and advertising. Let all your neighbors know your house is for sale. If they like the neighborhood they will look for their own new neighbor among their friends! It's in their best interest and yours, too.

Go through your house with a very critical eye. NEVER assume a buyer can see potential through imperfections, even if they only involve removing too much furniture or stuff. Happy selling!
