How to Hang a Picture

We all enjoy having attractive pictures hanging on the walls of our home. But it doesn't matter how expensive or how attractive the picture is, if it is not hung correctly it will not look good. Here are the steps to hanging a picture correctly on a wall in your home.

First, find the desired spot on the wall and mark it with a pencil. Pictures should hang at eye level, about 57 inches from the floor. At that height, draw a short horizontal line. Hold the center of your framed picture over that line and make a second line where the top of the frame hits the wall. Flip the picture over. If it has a hook in it, measure from the top of the hook to the top of the frame. If it has a wire, pull the wire taut and measure from the top of the frame to the peak of the wire. This tells you how many inches down from the top line that you have to put the nail in the wall. Now measure from the top-of-frame mark you made to the point where your wire or hook sits. Mark that point with a horizontal line and circle it. That's where the nail will go. Tap the wall on your hanging area. If you hear a dull thud, that means there is a stud beneath the sheetrock. You can tap your nail in at a 45 degree angle. However, if you hear a hollow sound, then you will need to get a picture-hanging hook or a hollow-wall anchor and screw. (If you prefer not to try the tapping method, there are stud finders available at your local hardware store.) Now you can hang your picture on the wall and level it.
